So, my first thought this morning and as I went to bed LAST night, was not surprisingly, SUGAR! Mama wants her sugar! What the hell were we thinking? Are we mad?
I have to be honest, although I had some minor cravings, the absolute hardest part was to not have artificial sweetner for my morning tea or afternoon iced tea. Then I had a realization: Maybe I will be drikning less caffeine on this challenge?
I found the eating throughout the day totally manageable, yet I thought a lot about consuming empty carbs and was able to resist.
Went to the grocery store and noticed some of the organic choices that I would never have thought twice to read the ingredients, had stuff like 'rice syrup' and 'corn syrup'. Just totally unfair. Made me want to boycott eating while I was on a kick...
I feel tonight like I lost a pound, maybe two, or I just feel instantly lighter for having been strict for one entire day. Tomorrow, maybe a glass of vino may occur, but for tonight, water, water, water...
As I sign off, I celebrate my TWO YEAR mark of moving to NYC. October 1st, 2006, my ship landed on this incredible island and I am happy to report, it's still going strong!
Thanks for a flawless first day!
We did it!
29 to go...

Guidelines, WEEK ONE
Yesterday was an entertaining day of emails and text messages from most of you who had anxiety or fear of embarking on 30 days without sugar. It was like asking you to go without make-up for 30 days or fast without food entirely! You should read what I got! Hysterical..."eating my last piece of cheescake", "having my LAST apple cider" "what's the prize for doing this", "can I still have splenda or equal in my coffee", "is alcohol allowed", 'NO MORE PINKBERRRRRY?'.
In all fairness, these are totally valid questions and concerns. My theory and hope is that we realize how deeply engrained sugar has weaved a constant in our lives without total awareness.
SUGAR IS FILLED WITH NUTRITIONALLY VOIDED CALORIES
Let's start by setting some guidelines for week one that are realistic and promote excitement to continue on the program for 30 days. With this comes the responsibility to read these blogs AND participate by adding comments, suggestions or questions.
So here it is in black and white (or green):
1. NO SUGAR IN ANY PROCESSED FORM
This includes but is not limited to:
-SUGAR IN THE RAW
-SACCHARINE
-FRUCTOSE
-SUCROLOSE
-ANYTHING WITH 'OSE' WHICH IS A FORM OF SUGAR WITHOUT ANY BENEFICIAL FACTORS, OFTEN CAUSING CANCER IN LAB RATS
2. FRUIT IS OKAY THIS WEEK. TRY TO CHOSE FRUITS THAT ARE LOWER IN NATURAL SUGARS: MELONS, PEARS, APPLES, etc
3. ALCOHOL IS OKAY FOR NOW...TRY TO STICK TO EITHER WINE (MAX 2 GLASSES) OR THE LEAST SUGAR OPTION: VODKA/CRANBERRY. ALCOHOL IS ABSORBED BY THE BODY IF IN HIGH AMOUNTS AS SUGAR WHICH IN TURN RAISES INSULIN LEVELS WHICH CONTROLS THE OVERLOAD.
Each week we will be extracting another form of sugar so that by the end of the month, we are sugar free! This is a PROCESS that requires massive amounts of dedication as well as patience.
I expect you to use this forum to confess should you cheat or if you need a boost of support.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not use this opportunity to add more carbs into your diet to make up for the sugar cravings. Too many carbs un-absorbed into your body turns into sugar and the cycle becomes never ending.
You can make this as challenging as you wish. A lot like class. It's up to you and only you.
Be reasonable about your progress and have forgiveness if you aren't perfect. There is no perfect.
May the force be with you...
Closing thoughts and advice tonight.
